Chad - wot no smoothies?What happened?

I’ve been pretty settled on smoothies for breakfast since the beginning of this paleo detox, but no more. Not because I don’t like them, far from it, but just in case they don’t like me.

I mentioned previously that something was affecting my breathing, quite dramatically at the time, and that’s still around. It’s nowhere near as pronounced, but still obvious that something isn’t right. Mostly it turns up when I exercise, but I don’t want it there at all!

My breathing has been a great deal better since I stopped smoking, but I’m just wondering what is stopping it from being better still.

Perfection?

Well why not?

Sometimes I can exercise vigorously for extended periods without any effect on my breathing. Other times I walk to the shops and I notice a restriction in my chest.

I don’t like that!

So yes, I want it to clear up completely, and I’m suspecting it may be diet related. This is the time to find out.

So why no smoothies?

Well I was suspecting a link to the large amount of dairy in my pre-Whole30 diet and, for that reason, I stopped eating ghee for a while. There didn’t seem to be any difference. It could still be that I guess, but I’m unconvinced.

So now I’m thinking that maybe the nuts and seeds in my smoothies could be having an impact on my ability to breathe freely.

Dave Asprey, the Bulletproof Executive, takes a very dim view of nuts and seeds due to the potential for molds and other toxins being present in them. I’ve never been entirely convinced by this mycotoxin malarkey, but he may have a point!

It’s certainly true for him that molds just aren’t a good thing to ingest, and I know from other sources that being in a damp, moldy room can affect your breathing.

So it has to be worth a look, right?

Too much sugar

Also, smoothies are generally discouraged on the Whole30. The argument is that there tends to be too much sugar in them and, with no chewing required, it’s easy to overeat.

I have to say I never worried about either of those things!

If I’m overeating them maybe I need to – I seem to be losing weight and I don’t really need to.

And the too much sugar? Well I know when I have too much sugar because I either get very hungry or fall asleep a couple of hours later. That doesn’t happen with my smoothies, they fill me up and keep me going for four or five hours. I don’t see the problem!

And yet, those are the rules of the game. So.

No smoothies for breakfast

I shall live on coffee.

No smoothies for breakfast nowOr maybe one of us will get round to cooking. Cara’s much better at that than I am, the getting round to it bit, and does an excellent scrambled eggs and bacon. It does seem to mean I’m only eating two meals a day, but I think I’ll survive!

So that’s it. I’ll behave. No smoothies for breakfast, or any other time for that matter. We’ll see if it makes a difference.

And what have I eaten today?

Brunch
Bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach

Dinner
Chicken breast in garlic and lemon
Avocado
Salad

Supper
An apple, probably

Drinks
Water with lemon juice
black coffee

And that’s it!
