Detox brain fog on The 30 Day Paleo Detox Challenge – Day 8

I have detox brain fog today!

In case you’d not noticed, I’m on a 30 day detoxing adventure and I’m documenting the whole thing right here in words and video. This is day eight so, after a challenging week of interesting symptoms, how am I doing? I started full of enthusiasm for Paleo Detoxing, am I still as keen?

Yes and no!

Fun and games and detox brain fog…

While not as bad as on previous detoxes, presumably because my standard diet is much cleaner these days, I’ve had my fair share of fun.

The infamous detox brain fog kicked in almost immediately. It probably didn’t help that I was already dealing with a chest infection and feeling pretty rough when I started, but hey, I like a challenge! It wasn’t until day seven that the mist started to clear and I could think straight for more than a couple of minutes.

Days 2 and 3 saw the worst of the cravings, mostly for cheese, or at least some form of dairy, it has to be said, although day 2 was also the time of the major crash and burn!

It was, of course, if you’re following the dates here, New Year’s Eve. Why did I start my detox challenge challenge before New Year’s Eve? Ah well! So anyway, I decided it would be a really great idea to get a bottle of wine and a pack of smokes to celebrate – took me a couple of hours to decide, but I did it!

The wine was really very nice, so only an issue because alcohol was of limits for detoxing. Smoking on the other hand…

Horrible it was, even after just two days of not smoking. I managed to gasp my way through four of them, but really didn’t enjoy it! Which is, actually, a very positive experience, it means that my last memory of smoking is very unpleasant. Rather than being left with fond memories of cosy times with an old friend, I’m now mindful of the hideous taste and the dizzy, tired, heavy feeling that I get from smoking.

Makes it a whole lot easier to deal with any cravings that dare to show themselves!

Moving on… days 4, 5 and 6 brought me lower back pain bad enough to keep me awake most of the night. The back pain was caused by tight hamstrings and went away when I did enough stretching exercises to loosen them up.

And by day 8..

I’m feelin’ fine!

Mighty fine!

I’m over the chest infection, the brain fog has lifted and the back pain subsided. Nothing really to complain about at this stage, not even any real cravings, just possibly…

Frustration or boredom

While I’m not really craving anything, certainly not cigarettes and alcohol, if it’s anything it’s still dairy. Cheese, and the ability to eat stuff out of jars! No, not cheese in jars, but the fact that so many processed or ready made foods contain some form of dairy.

That’s the real frustration. I love to cook, but I don’t always want to spend an hour or so preparing food. Sometimes I want to cheat and use a sauce from a jar. Sometimes I just want sweet chilli sauce and that, obviously perhaps, contains a heap of sugar.

Sometimes I’d really like a coffee after my meal. Not that I usually take sugar or milk in my coffee, but coffee is way off limits for me when I’m detoxing.

And so it goes.

The first week is easy as the symptoms really let you know that something good is happening. After that, I’m not so sure. Will it be so obvious? Will there be enough evidence of improvement to keep me enthused? I hope so!

I’m either going to realise that I just don’t need any dairy and sugar in my life or I’m going to get very frustrated! Either way I shall document it right here.

Will I go on a mad cheese binge or chug a bottle of chilli sauce at day 28? Or will I finally quit whinging about it? Time will tell. But anyway…

What did I eat today?

Smoothie – banana, berries, coconut milk, egg yolks, spinach, spirulina, water

Scrambled eggs
Salad with avocado, tuna, olives, olive oil

Poached pollack
Mange tout, broccoli and mushrooms

As usual, just water – lots of bottled spring water

And that’s all!
